Medical graduate student scammed out of 11 million baht – Bangkok Post

A 25-year-old medical graduate student, known in publications under the nickname "Bank", became a victim of an organized telephone scam and lost a total of 11 million baht. The incident began on August 22 at about 15:00, when the student received the first call from a person who introduced himself as an employee of a mobile operator.

According to the victim, the caller reported a problem with his SIM card and the need to confirm personal data, which was followed by subsequent calls, allegedly from police officers and other official structures. For three days, the fraudsters sought from the Bank to transfer funds and transfer cash to their accomplices, who acted in collusion.

According to the information provided by the victim himself at a press conference in the office of the social media group Sai Mai Tong Rod (Survive), the scam included elements of psychological pressure: he was threatened with criminal prosecution and informed about the alleged cases against him if he did not cooperate with the investigation - that is, did not hand over the money. It was in such conditions that he allegedly made consecutive large transfers and handed over cash, after which he discovered that he had been deceived.

The victim brought evidence to the headquarters of the public support group Sai Mai Tong Rod, which has about 500,000 followers on Facebook, and told journalists and volunteers of the group about the details of the fraud. The Bangkok Post report indicates that the total amount of damage amounted to 11 million baht, and the losses increased over the course of three days amid escalating threats from persons posing as police officers.

Bangkok police and telephone fraud investigation units regularly record similar schemes, where criminals pretend to be employees of mobile operators, banks or law enforcement agencies in order to gain access to the victim's credentials or force him to transfer money.
