Phuket Airport to implement automated passport gates starting June 13

Phuket International Airport will open automated passport gates for departing passengers on June 13. This measure is intended to reduce queues at immigration control following complaints on social media about congestion and alleged paid fast-track services. Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploitalai Laksameesaengchan stated on June 3 that the government had instructed relevant agencies to address the issue of congestion at the airport's immigration control. The implementation of the automated system follows social media reports of congestion at the airport's immigration control and allegations of additional charges for so-called fast-track services. The automated system aims to expedite passport checks, reduce waiting times, and improve immigration services to international standards, as the number of passengers and tourists passing through Phuket Airport continues to grow. Ploitalai Laksameesaengchan emphasized that immigration services at the airport operate according to government procedures and standards. She added that there is no policy of charging additional fees for special privileges at immigration checkpoints. On June 2, Monchai Tanode, Director of Phuket Airport, and airport executives observed a test of the automated border control system in the international departures passport control area. Phuket Airport has assigned staff to work with immigration officers and assist passengers in using the new system. Travelers will need a valid e-passport to use the automated gates. Previously, immigration police denied claims that Phuket International Airport had opened a paid "special lane" for passengers. Police stated that delays at immigration control were caused by a temporary system slowdown during an unusually busy period of flights. The incident occurred due to a brief malfunction in the immigration information system. Police insisted that no expedited channel was offered in exchange for 200 baht or any other fee.
