Panglong News! A large operation by Thai authorities on Panglong Island led to the detention of 22 foreigners. This is part of a major campaign against illegal activities, within which over 200 million baht worth of land has already been confiscated! Resolute anti-crime actions began in May. The Surat Thani province police completed the second phase of the operation targeting foreign companies suspected of fraud. Besides arrests, more than 40 plots of land with a total value exceeding 200 million baht were seized. The operation focuses on uncovering illegal schemes in oil extraction and transportation, as well as legal and accounting firms and shell companies. In Saturday raids involving over 300 police officers, 39 new cases were initiated and 45 arrest warrants were issued. Special attention was drawn to the case of FB Properties Co Ltd (Yoga House). Here, an Israeli citizen was found who is allegedly the real owner, using Thai nominal shareholders. The company owned eight plots of land worth over 60 million baht and, reportedly, operated a hotel business without necessary permits. The results were divided into two categories: 32 companies were deemed nominal, leading to the detention of 22 foreigners and the confiscation of 45 land plots. Another group includes 32 companies where the foreign participation share, presumably, exceeds the allowed limit. The issue with nominal owners on Phangan worsened since 2024. Currently, more than 3200 foreign companies are registered out of 4761 total, with Israeli, French, and British investors leading. Police also check for possible involvement of government officials in aiding criminals. Similar measures will be announced nationwide to combat illegal activities and protect local residents' interests. "This operation is a clear signal to everyone trying to use loopholes in the law for illegal activities." Have you encountered suspicious schemes during your stay?
