A serious accident involving a concrete mixer occurred on Phuket.

On the hill slope near Kata-Noi beach, a serious road accident involving a concrete mixer occurred. As a result of the incident, taxi driver Sampan Kauchang suffered severe injuries and was taken to Chalong Hospital, while several other people sustained minor injuries. The incident took place around 13:30 on May 21st and was recorded by surveillance cameras. According to Karoon Police, the concrete mixer collided with three cars and a Red Lobster restaurant at an intersection. The police report does not mention the cause of the accident, but The Phuket News reports that brake failure could have been the reason. According to data from the ThaiRSC Foundation, as of May 21st, 64 people had died in accidents on Phuket since January 1st. This is more than double the number recorded last year, when such a level of mortality was only reached in July. The highest number of deaths was recorded in Tambons Wichit and Chalong (eight each), followed by Srisuntorn (six). On average, one person dies on the island's roads every two days, which significantly exceeds last year's figures. Experts note that accidents often occur due to non-compliance with traffic rules and poor vehicle condition. The authorities of Phuket continue efforts to improve road safety, but the results are still insufficient to reduce accident rates.
